Information about Barnard Course Evaluations
Barnard course evaluations take place at the end of each semester. Students are asked to evaluate their courses and instructors through the Course Evaluations and Surveys platform. All courses are included in the online evaluations unless indicated by the department. This feedback is used by faculty as they continuously revise and enhance their courses, and by the College during the faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion process. Course evaluations are usually open for about two weeks before the start of final exams.
Please contact course-evals@barnard.edu or the Provost's Office with questions and comments about Barnard course evaluations. Students may also check with the instructor, department chair, or department assistants/administrators. Columbia undergraduate and graduate courses are evaluated using different forms and independent policies & procedures. Contact courseworks@columbia.edu for questions and comments about Columbia course evaluations.
For Students
Students can access course evaluations by logging in to CourseWorks (Canvas) or through the links provided in the reminder emails sent during the evaluation period.
Evaluation responses are completely anonymous. The identity of respondents is confidential; responses are not linked to the student who submitted them. Evaluation results are not available until the instructor has submitted 100% of their grades, or after the grade submission deadline.
Evaluations for courses with fewer than 5 students enrolled (which could lead to possible identification of individual students) are not released to instructors. Department administrators and chairs must request those evaluations, and they are charged with sharing that information either by distilling that information or, if the report could not possibly be linked to students, they may share the report directly.
The evaluation system sends automated emails to "non-respondent" students to encourage participation, but does not identify which students have or have not completed the evaluation until the evaluation period is closed.
Please send an email to course-evals@barnard.edu with the course ID (the name of your course in CourseWorks) and request either an unlock or reset. Unlock will leave your responses untouched and a reset will unlock and remove your responses. We cannot unlock or reset after the evaluation period has closed.
Students are requested to submit all assigned evaluation forms for all courses. To encourage participation, Barnard students (with the exception of graduating seniors) will be blocked from viewing their grade online for any course for which they have not completed an evaluation. The grade block starts the day after evaluations close and lasts for three (3) weeks.
For Instructors and Administrators
Department Chairs, Administrators, and Faculty can access evaluations by logging in to Course Evaluations and Surveys.
Instructors, department chairs, program directors, and department administrators can ensure that course evaluations are carried out properly by reviewing the evaluation timeline and the instructions provided to them. It is their responsibility to be the primary support to their department throughout the duration of steps carried out during the semester to prepare for the administration of course evaluations. The Provost’s Office will send communications with all related instructions and deadlines at the start of each step. We encourage faculty and staff to reach out to course-evals@barnard.edu with any questions or concerns as they review the Department Worksheets, confirm proper enrollment, designate proper surveys, and add additional questions.
A standard evaluation form will be applied to most Barnard courses, but instructors or departments may add up to ten supplemental questions of their own. There are distinct templates or forms for Lectures/Seminars and for Labs. If there are Teaching Assistants being evaluated for a course then a TA-specific survey will be included as well.
Examples of these standard forms can be found below:
Graduate-level (GU) courses taught by Barnard faculty should be evaluated by Barnard. All other graduate courses are evaluated by Columbia Arts & Sciences; procedures for those evaluations courses are described on the Faculty of Arts and Science Course Evaluations page. Please contact course-evals@barnard.edu with any questions about this distinction, or contact the Columbia department chair or administrator to receive their reports.
March (Spring) & October (Fall):
Academic Departments complete Department Worksheets
Department Chairs and Program Directors and their department administrators/assistants receive worksheets listing their courses from the Provost’s Office via Google Drive. On the worksheet they indicate which courses should be evaluated, which type of evaluation template or form should be used for each course (e.g., lecture or lab) and how many instructors and TAs will be evaluated. They also confirm that the participants in each course are listed correctly in CourseWorks.
The staff of the Provost’s Office and IMATS review the department worksheets to make sure they are complete and resolve any issues. The staff of IMATS assigns the appropriate evaluation forms to each course in CourseWorks.
April (Spring) & November (Fall):
Academic Departments review the evaluation assignments on Course Evaluations and Surveys
Instructors and department administrators/assistants check the evaluation forms in Course Evaluations and Surveys to make sure that the correct templates have been assigned to each course, that the instructors and TAs are properly designated on course rosters, and optionally add up to 10 course-specific questions. After the finalized evaluation forms are assigned to courses, no more changes are possible.
Two weeks before Student Final Exams start:
Course Evaluation Period Begins
The evaluations forms are available on CourseWorks to be completed by course participants. Instructors are encouraged to remind students in class that course evaluations are posted during this period.
On the Evening prior to Final Exams starting, 11:59pm:
Course Evaluation Period Ends and Grade Block Begins for Non-respondents.
Students who do not complete their course evaluations, with the exception of graduating students, will have their grades blocked.
May (Spring) & January (Fall):
Evaluation Reports are Released to Department Chairs, Administrators, Faculty, and Teaching Assistants
Department Chairs, Administrators, Faculty, and Teaching Assistants are notified of evaluation report release dates and review their evaluations.
