Equipment Room Hours
The Equipment Room is open 9am to 6pm Monday thru Friday on days when there are in-person classes in the Fall and Spring semesters. We are closed on all college holidays and breaks, as well as during reading days and exams. For summer session or other irregular hours, see the imats.barnard.edu homepage.
Equipment Availability
Equipment is available for Barnard College & Columbia University-affiliated students, faculty, and staff for projects related to curriculum/college events.
Restrictions:
- Course reserved equipment is only available for students currently enrolled in Barnard academic courses.
- Patrons can only check out 1 camera per reservation.
- Patrons can only check out 1 light kit per reservation.
- For all other equipment, patrons can only check out a maximum of 2 of any one item.

Rental Period
- Standard checkout periods are 3 days including the day of check out. (i.e. a Monday checkout will be due on Wednesday.)
- Equipment picked up on Thursday or Friday is due on the following Monday.
- You may have only one standing reservation or checkout at a time. Reservations can only be made up to 14 days in advance.
- Renewals are subject to equipment availability and demand. To request a renewal, please email imats@barnard.edu before the equipment is due.
Checkout Procedure
- Go to our Make A Request page.
- New IMATS patrons must fill out a Patron Registration Form.
- Check out equipment on the Patron Portal. Reservations must be submitted a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the desired pick-up time.
- Budget at least 15 minutes for both the checkout and return process.
NOTE: If you are more than 4 hours late to your pick-up appointment, your reservation will be automatically canceled and you will not be able to pick up your equipment. Late or missed pick-ups interfere with our ability to serve other patrons. Please be sure to select a pick-up appointment time that works for you.
Late Policy
- For every day equipment is late, a patron will be restricted from checkouts for one week. (i.e. equipment that is 2 days overdue will result in being restricted from checkouts for 2 weeks.)
- If equipment is more than seven days past due, patrons may be banned from checkouts for the remainder of the semester.
- If an item is damaged or lost, the patron must reimburse the college for its full replacement value/repair cost.
NOTE: If you have not finished your project within the allotted checkout time, please email imats@barnard.edu before the equipment is due to request a renewal. Checkouts may be renewed one time each, for a period of up to 3 business days, contingent on equipment availability. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to renew a checkout, as the equipment may be reserved for another community member. We cannot renew checkouts that are already past due.
Repeated late checkouts, missed pick-ups, and improper treatment of IMATS equipment or staff may result in patron accounts being placed on temporary hold or banned for extended periods of time.
